Mount Snowdon via the Watkins Trail - Essential Tips

Mount Snowdon, the crown jewel of Wales, beckons adventurers from far and wide to embark on a remarkable journey to its majestic summit. Today I will guide you along the Watkins Trail, sharing essential information on parking, hiking duration, essential items to bring, and valuable tips to ensure a successful and unforgettable hike in one of my favourite parts of the UK.

Finding the Perfect Parking Spot

To begin your Watkins Trail adventure, park your vehicle at the Nant Gwynant car park, located at the head of Llyn Gwynant. This convenient starting point provides ample parking space for hikers eager to conquer Mount Snowdon. Be sure to arrive early, especially during peak seasons, as parking spaces can fill up quickly.

Hiking Duration: The Journey to the Summit

The Watkins Trail presents a challenging yet incredibly rewarding ascent to the top of Mount Snowdon. This trail covers a distance of approximately 8 miles (13 km) one way, making it a full-day adventure. Hiking times can vary based on individual fitness levels, breaks taken, and weather conditions. On average, hikers can expect the round trip to take between 6 to 8 hours, providing opportunities to savour the scenery and get some beautiful views along the way.

Essential Items to Pack

- Proper footwear: Ensure you have sturdy, comfortable hiking boots/ shoes to tackle the varied terrain. The path started easy and gradually got more and more rocky with loose scree near the top.

- Layered clothing: Dressing in layers allows you to adapt to changing weather conditions. Carry a waterproof jacket, fleece or insulated layers, hat, gloves, and extra socks. It’s Wales, you never know what the weather is going to do.

- Hydration and nutrition: Carry at least 2L of water per person to stay hydrated throughout the hike. Pack energising snacks like nuts, energy bars, and fruit to sustain your energy levels.

- Navigation tools: While the Watkins Trail is well-marked, carrying a map, compass, or a reliable GPS device is advisable for added safety and confidence.

- First aid kit: Always have a basic first aid kit handy for any minor injuries. Plasters, antibacterial wipes and bandages are always a good shout.

- Camera/ binoculars: If you only do this hike once, you’ll want to make your memories last a lifetime. If you’re into birds and wildlife, don’t forget your binoculars.

Valuable Tips for a Successful Hike

- Check the weather forecast: Prior to your hike, stay updated on the weather conditions and plan your journey accordingly. Choose a clear day to maximise your chances of enjoying the breathtaking views from the summit. We went on a really cloudy day but before we went I had a good feeling about it. When we defended above the clouds I was so pleased I listened to my gut feeling.

- Start early: Begin your hike in the early morning to allow lots of time to reach the summit and descend safely before darkness falls! It will give you a little more time to relax at the top too.

- Pace yourself: The Watkins Trail is challenging, with steep sections and rocky terrain. Take breaks as needed, listen to your body, and maintain a steady pace to avoid exhaustion.

- Respect the environment: Keep the trail clean by disposing of waste properly and adhering to leave-no-trace principles. Respect wildlife and follow any guidelines or restrictions in place. When we went there was a giant pile of rubbish at the top, so sad to see.

- Be mindful of other hikers: Mount Snowdon can be popular, especially during peak seasons. Show courtesy to fellow hikers by allowing them to pass on narrower sections of the trail and maintaining a positive, friendly attitude. Look out for each other.

I hope this has been a helpful read before your journey up Snowdon!
